Friday 25 June - We had an incredible afternoon  yesterday in Gryffe. What would have been last year's Under 18 Football Team returned to play the staff. It was a close fought game, but there was only ever going to be one winner
Staff 2   -   Pupils 0    officiated by Rev Gary Noonan
Scorers - Findlay, Johnson

The former S6 pupils returned for their leavers day, in the rain, and they had a great time. What a fun way to finish having missed so much.

During period 7 all pupils and staff watched some amazing videos. Please take time to look at the achievements video in particular. Our pupils and staff are simply the best ......... excellent and outstanding.

Wednesday 23 June - The annual Summer Theme non-uniform day took place on Monday. Pupils required little persuasion to drop the uniform for the day, while staff welcomed the distraction of the busy end of term. The staff competition was a very high standard this year with fantastic effort from Music, Art and The Office. However, Science were crowned the winners by Mr Johnson, one of his last duties as Head Teacher.

As always, money raised for a fantastic cause with the Beatson benefitting from the pupil and staff generosity!

We are proud of the attainment of our pupils, and equally of their many significant achievements. Tuesday 27 April - 'Last weekend the Gryffe Charities Committee took part in this year’s Kiltwalk. We walked 7 miles, raised £540 for the charity CREATE Paisley, and got a fantastic view from the top of the Gleniffer Braes! Thank you to those of you who donated.' - Gregor Speir
Well done to the following S6 pupils involved in this - Gwyn Devoy, Megan Gracie, Gregor Hewitt, Holly Kyle, Iain Milne, Marc Rennie, Hannah Robertson, Gregor Speir
A fantastic effort.

Friday 23 April - We have had an excellent start to this new term, with pupils fully engaged in lessons and a really nice atmosphere around the school - lots of people happy to be back. The pupils have had such a difficult time of late, and I can't praise them enough for how they have responded. This week we asked that all pupils stayed on the school campus at lunchtime, in order to protect pupils in school and also the local community, and this has happened without fuss or argument. The pupils have understood the reasoning and I thank them for their maturity and support.

On behalf of the Gryffe High School Charities & Events Team I would like to tell you about Gryffe's Upcoming Kilt walk event. This Weekend, we will be taking part in the Kiltwalk to raise money for CREATE Paisley. CREATE is a Paisley based charity that tackles issues such as loneliness and mental health, by giving young people a space to express themselves. The Kilt walk is an opportunity for our school to raise money during a significantly difficult time for some young people.. If you’d like to donate please use the link below to donate and support our walk for CREATE. Find out more about CREATE at their website https://www.createpaisley.org.uk/ and follow us on Instagram @gryffecharities for more updates. Thank you.

Tuesday 20 April - I must state what a delight it has been to have all our pupils back in school. Yesterday, and today, I have had many very positive comments from pupils and staff, all happy to be getting back into our routines. The pupils have been outstanding and seem particularly engaged in their work - so long may that continue.

We would also like to say well done to Sasha Kaloheris in S5 who has just released a new single 'Bad Days'.

Friday 16 April - We are looking forward to all pupils returning to school on Monday 19 April. I can say, with no doubt whatsoever, that staff have missed being in front of pupils for face-to-face Learning and Teaching, and of course supporting the wellbeing of our pupils.
All pupils return to school at 8:47am on Monday 19 April. Pupils will return to their normal period by period timetables, and the school day will be back to our normal timings. Please read the detail in my Head Teacher's update.

Wednesday 31 March -
May I take this opportunity to wish all pupils and parents/carers an enjoyable and relaxing break, albeit I would expect our S4, S5 and S6 pupils to be studying hard in preparation for their up and coming assessments.  I look forward to all the pupils coming back on Monday 19 April, and hope it’s the beginning of getting back into our routines and that continuous drive for improvement, as well as enjoying being amongst friends again.

Wednesday 24 March - Since Monday 15 March we have welcomed senior pupils into school every alternate day, which has been an absolute delight. I have thoroughly enjoyed chatting to the pupils, visiting classes, walking around the playground and watching them interact with each other, however I also appreciate that some are still a little wary and unsure. We are aware of various levels of individual pupil engagement over the past months, and have had a range of discussions with pupils and parents/carers on how we can work together and support pupils as best we can. We are offering, as one way to support pupils, a small Easter School for pupils in S5 and S6 from Tuesday 6 - Friday 9 April, as detailed in my letter. On return on Monday 19 April we will try and offer a further variety of supports for all pupils.

Monday 15 March - It was an absolute delight to have pupils back in school today, getting back into the 'school routines'. Smiling faces all round, pupils and teachers. I hope the S4,5&6 Burns/Fleming pupils enjoyed their day and look forward to returning on Wednesday. I also hope the S1,2&3 pupils from Burns House enjoyed their day, and although they are now back to remote learning I am sure they will look forward to returning next Tuesday.
Tomorrow we welcome S4,5&6 pupils from Mackintosh/Wallace, and S1,2&3 pupils from Mackintosh House. Please remember that it will be packed lunches, or food from the canteen, as all pupils must remain on the school campus in line with our Health & Safety procedures.

Friday 5 March - We continue to promote Wellbeing to all our pupils. You will know that we have allocated 3 wellbeing slots within pupil timetables - Monday, Tuesday & Thursday from 3:00 - 3:40 pm. The picture shows S6 pupil Jennifer, who states ' I really like to do baking during my wellbeing period and this carrot cake was also made for the Fairtrade bake off during Fairtrade Fortnight.' Well done to all pupils who use their time well - feel free to send in your pictures - gryffehighenquiries@renfrewshire.gov.uk

Friday 5 March - The Pupil Management Group, all 24 pupils, continue to have their Friday morning meetings - although at the ridiculously later start of 8:20 am!!! They discuss their remits, detail progress to date and aims for the next week. It is an absolute pleasure being amongst such forward thinking and dynamic young leaders.
Each pairing of leaders are in the process of making a video presentation, of their work to date, for the current S5 pupils. Our key principle, as it has been for quite some while, is to build for the future and to support the next grouping of young leaders to take us to the next level.

Thursday 4 March - A great achievement for Beth Callaghan in S2. Beth was nominated to play Schindler’s List on her violin in the Renfrewshire String Ensemble for the Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire joint Holocaust Memorial Programme. Well done Beth.

Wednesday 3 March - Ewan Mitchell and Oscar James (both S6) took part in the Oxford Union Schools Debating Competition last night. This is a really tough competition with many of the long established debating schools in central Scotland participating.  There were almost 40 teams in total, and although the boys were not in the half dozen teams "going" to the final later this month, they again performed extremely well.  Hopefully both boys will continue their burgeoning debating careers at University. Well done for another fine performance.

Monday 1 March - Just a gentle reminder for all of us to consider our own wellbeing. Built into our school timetable, on a Monday, Tuesday and Thursday - from 3:00 - 3:40 pm, we have our own wellbeing block. I was delighted to see pupils, and parents/carers, walking by the school, some pupils on our school pitches running, walking, non contact sports..... and we have Rachael at the Tennis Club, as well as Fox and Gregor out litter picking in Houston, South Mound. Please feel free to send any of your wellbeing activities photographs to :

Tuesday 22 December - Not how we had hoped to start our New Year, however the Health, Safety and Wellbeing of our pupils is of the upmost importance. I will provide an update to all pupils/parents/carers on Wednesday 6 January, once I have had an opportunity to discuss with staff and Local Authority colleagues. Remote learning for pupils will start on Monday 11 January and we hope pupils will return to school on Monday 18 January 2021.

Our S5/6 Assessment Diet is to commence on Thursday 21 January and finish on Friday 5 February 2021.  We hope to keep to these dates. Should there be any further announcements from the Government then we may consider moving the Assessment Diet back. Friday 18 December - I wish my last update of 2020 to be one of pride. As much as we have had a very difficult year, it has also been one where the achievements of our pupils, staff, parents/carers and wider community has been recognised as outstanding. I am so proud of our children, in how they have adapted and the positivity shown in taking on all challenges - especially in supporting each other along the way. I would like to finish with you reading a poem written by Olivia......

Merry Christmas and all the very best in the New Year

Mr Johnson

Friday 18 December - I would like to ask for the support of all parents/carers in encouraging their children to arrive promptly on Wednesday 6 January, to ensure that they are in school by 8:47 am and making their way to class. We wish to maximise Learning and Teaching time and start lessons at 8:50 am. Could I also please ask that pupils are in full school uniform.

Thursday 17 December - Gryffe High School hosted the first Renfrewshire Online School Captains' Conference today, chaired by our own Captains Calum and Rachael. The key young leaders of all 11 Renfrewshire Secondary Schools shared effective practice with each other. Each pairing of Captains gave a presentation on key focus areas within their school and then there was discussion around their role as School Captains, the challenges they face and how they have led improvements within their own school. A very impressive grouping of young ladies and gentlemen.

Thursday 17 December - Following on from last Friday's Christmas Jumper Day for 'Save the Children', the results are in for the Best Staff Jumper. As you can see, the standards were very high. Especially well done to Mrs Taylor (Science) and Miss Monaghan (Music) for their efforts. They qualified for the ‘Best Christmas Dressed Teacher’ competition with a vote taking place with S1 pupils. Well done to Miss Monaghan who came out on top.

Tuesday 15 December - We wish we were having our usual Christmas Concert in our School Theatre, where we have always had a feast of music, fun and laughter..... no one mention the Twelve Days of Christmas or Mr Laird might just pop up and get you singing!!!!
For the moment things are different, however we are delighted to provide the link to our Virtual Christmas Concert..... Enjoy, reflect and think positive for the year ahead.

Tuesday 15 December - Ewan Mitchell and Oscar James (both S6) took part in the first round of the Donald Dewar Memorial Debating competition, organised and run by the Law Society earlier this month. Like all debating competitions this year, it took place online with teams from St Columba's, Holy Cross and Broxburn Academy.  Proposing the motion "This house would make voting compulsory" the Gryffe team were up against a formidable Broxburn team (semi-finalists in last year's competition) and this was certainly a very strong debate with great performances from both teams. Deservedly, the teams from Gryffe and Broxburn both progressed through to the second round.  Well done to Ewan and Oscar for impressive performances in the first round and good luck in the next round at the end of January.

Monday 14 December - Only ONE more sleep until the link to our Virtual Christmas Concert is revealed. Unfortunately we are unable to have our usual Christmas Concert in the Theatre, which was scheduled for tomorrow evening, Tuesday 15 December. However, tomorrow evening you can watch our pupils performing, albeit in a slightly different way....... the link below is a video advert for our Virtual Christmas Concert.

Friday 11 December - LGBT Silver Charter
We are proud to announce that we have been awarded the Silver LGBT Charter Award. We have been working towards the Silver Charter, to be able to demonstrate our ongoing commitment to equality and diversity & ensure that Gryffe is inclusive of all LGBT+ people. The Charter requires staff and pupils to demonstrate that they have undertaken LGBT awareness training and that all practices, resources, and policies are as inclusive as possible.
Congratulations to all staff and pupils - another proud day for us all!

Friday 4 December - Advanced Higher Modern Studies focuses on Crime and Law for the whole year. As part of our study of responses to crime, we invited Procurator Fiscal Mairi-Clare McMillan and Defence Lawyer Matthew McGovern to speak to both Advanced classes online.  The students gained great insight into the operations of the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) and developed more of an understanding of their relationship with the police and their role in directing aspects of police investigations.

Wednesday 2 December - As you know, this year the Citizenship Committee has been working with Renfrewshire based ‘Night Before Christmas’ Charity who aim to give Christmas Eve boxes to families living in poverty, who would not otherwise be able to afford this tradition for their children. Friday 27 November – It is with great pride that we inform you that The Sunday Times has just announced Gryffe High School as:
SCOTTISH STATE SECONDARY SCHOOL OF THE YEAR
with full detail being published in their paper on Sunday 29 November.

We went through our Her Majesty’s inspection in February, with the report published in August, and came out with recognition of our EXCELLENT practice. In June, Gryffe won Respect Me’s ‘Change Starts with Us’ Award for our efforts in regard to anti-bullying. In September, Gryffe was accredited as a Vision School for Holocaust Education in Scotland. In October, UNICEF accredited Gryffe as a Gold Rights Respecting School, and in early November, Gryffe was Awarded their 3rd Eco Green Flag.
Now SCOTTISH STATE SECONDARY SCHOOL OF THE YEAR.

Mr Johnson stated ‘To say I am proud of our pupils and staff is a complete understatement. To be the Head Teacher of a school where the pupils, day in day out, impress with their enthusiasm, drive and persistence is an absolute pleasure and privilege.’

Tuesday 24 November - Last week we had a focus on National Anti-Bullying Week, and ran a variety of events throughout the week from Bee scavenger hunts, to refreshing lemonade drinks to Do-nut Worry donations. Gryffe also featured on Respect Me's twitter page with our very own stigma reducing mental health group 'Like Minds'... #BeeKind. This focus is obviously not only for the one week, it is week in week out. The picture has some wise words from our Pupil Management Group.

Monday 23 November - Physical Education/School Sport
For a few weeks we got a good bit of life and soul back into the school as our sports clubs were getting back up and running. However, whilst in Level 4, a reminder that all PE lessons will now take place outdoors again. Pupils are asked to prepare accordingly for potentially cold and wet weather and are encouraged to bring plenty warm and waterproof clothing. Classes will remain outdoors for all lessons unless any conditions become dangerous. In line with Education Scotland guidelines, all school sport sessions are suspended whilst in Level 4.

Monday 23 November - ‘Maths Inside’ is a photo competition open to everyone living in Scotland hosted by the University of Glasgow. As part of Maths Week Scotland 2020, pupils were asked to make some maths connections called ‘Complete the pattern’. Two photos were presented and entrants were asked to complete the pattern with a photo and commentary of their own. Very well done to Aidan Smith in 1B who took first prize in the third/fourth level category. His entry was called ‘Round and Round, Up and Down’. Brilliant work, Aidan.

Friday 20 November - Well done to Gregor and Iain in S6 for their work with Brian Costello of Headstrong for International Men’s day. A lesson created on Men’s Mental Health that will be delivered to all S1 and S2 in Gryffe over the next week and opened up to schools across the country. A big thanks to Brian for all his help!!   https://fb.watch/1SDvkYrE_F/

Tuesday 17 November - Today a group of S3 /S4 pupils from Gryffe's Digital Ninja Group took part in a virtual bootcamp as part of the #DigiInventors Challenge. Throughout the day, the team joined in a series of online sessions to help them develop their app idea in preparation for presenting it to the judging panel in an upcoming final in December. Focusing on Wellbeing, their app 'Gryffe Cares' was designed to offer a digital solution to ensure that pupils had somewhere to go if they needed to talk to someone about their mental health or felt that they were victims of bullying. The team are now looking forward to refining their app idea and getting ready for the final.

Saturday 14 November- Just Announced...... Gryffe High has been successful in gaining a share of the Celebrating Renfrewshire Fund 2020. The Celebrating Renfrewshire Fund - by young people, for young people - gives you, as a young person, a voice in your community and lets you decide how to make living as a young person in Renfrewshire better. Gryffe Wellbeing put forward their idea of the 'Find your Angel' project and it received the most votes in the 'Villages' category.
Look out for further detail on this project in the coming weeks. Very well done to the Gryffe Wellbeing Team for their hard work in making this happen.

Wednesday 11 November - Today was the day that we delivered our Foodbank collections to the Trussell Trust: Renfrewshire Foodbank. Every house contributed, with Mackintosh just out there in front with the most donations. Well done to everyone who contributed to such a worthwhile cause. The House Captains had the responsibility of packaging up donations. On the way to the drop-off, they dropped by Houston and Killellan Kirk to ensure their weekly donation was dropped off safely as well. On arrival at Trussell Trust in Renfrew, they were given an informative talk about the next stage for the donations and how they are distributed to those in need. Gryffe Pupils, Parents, Carers and Staff should be very proud of their contributions and the benefit they will have to those in need in the local area.

Wednesday 11 November - At 11:00 am on 11 November 1918 the Armistice, which ended the fighting during the First World War, came into effect. Since then it has been traditional to honour the millions who have died during all wars and conflicts by observing Two Minutes Silence on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
As a school we will have a Two Minute Silence today, Wednesday 11 November, at 11:00 am. All classes will also be shown a video clip on Remembrance, will stop for the two minute silence, and then continue with the clip. The bell will ring at 11:00 am then again at 11:02 am.

Sunday 30 August - Health & Wellbeing
On Friday all pupils were informed that as of Monday 31 August they will be expected to wear a face mask on entering the school and then when walking through the corridors. Extra face masks will be available for any pupil who forgets their own mask.
Should there be a reason that any individual pupil is unable to wear a face mask for health reasons then they should speak to either their Year Head or Miss Brown in the Support Department. Pupils travelling on school buses will also be required to wear a face mask.

Tuesday 25 August - Gryffe High School are once again offering new S1 parents and carers an exciting opportunity to learn more about their child’s new school and be involved in the lessons they will be taught, by the teachers they will be taught by. Health and Safety is obviously our key focus at the moment, so we will follow strict procedures for parents arriving at school, and can also explain all the procedures that we have in place for pupils.

Thursday 20 August - Activ8 - Our weekly Wednesday after school club returned yesterday and runs from 3:00pm - 3:45pm. We offer a reduced programme this session with current restrictions. Activities on offer include drama and various outdoor sporting activities such as fitness, football, hockey, lacrosse, softball and tennis. From Wednesday 26 August we will open up this programme to both S1 and S2 and would encourage any S1/2 pupils to report to the Games Hall at the end of the school day on Wednesday to register and be set up for the session. We will monitor attendance and open to other year groups at a later stage if possible.

Wednesday 19 August - I would like to thank all parents/carers for supporting our return to full time education. The pupils have been an absolute credit to all, and I have been so impressed in how they have adapted to our new procedures and systems. There is an understanding that Health and Safety comes first, and that we compromise in other areas. Please read my update covering: Our return to school; Canteen; PE; Activ8; School Uniform; Health and Safety; SQA Results and Her Majesty's Inspection Report for Gryffe.

Our very positive feedback from Paula Cowan of UWS and Director of the Vision Schools for Scotland programme, included the following:
‘Your school clearly places Citizenship at the heart of the curriculum and helps pupils to learn about the events of the Holocaust through a variety of opportunities.’

To be the head teacher of a school where the pupils, day in day out, impress with their enthusiasm, drive and persistence is an absolute pleasure and privilege. I eagerly await the return of our pupils to school this week, and then supporting them as they pick up where we left off – supporting the wellbeing of all, striving for improvement, and keeping their focus as ambitious, but caring, young people with high aspirations - Mr Johnson

Friday 7 August - We look forward to our pupils returning next week having finalised all our Health & Safety checks. We have sorely missed the pupils and look forward to getting settled back into school life, with pupils being considerate of others, thinking about our collective responsibilities throughout the day, and focusing on our key values - Caring, Learning and Achieving - within a safe and nurturing environment.

Monday 3 August - All our Senior Phase pupils, including last year's S6 pupils, will receive their SQA Results tomorrow, Tuesday 4 August. Following the SQA Results some pupils make wish to change a subject(s) and we have our usual re-negotiation day on Wednesday 5 August... please see the attached detail.
