BBC News School Report– Eclipse Report
Hi there,
We are the Gryffe High Media Team.

We have been working with the science club (pictured) getting prepared for the Eclipse. They had a great visit from John Pressly at Coats Observatory who told them all about the eclipse and how to make safe viewers.
We are also pictured with John Pressly here.
Keep an eye out here for more news today!

On Friday the 20th of March, the first solar eclipse that can be seen from Houston since 11 August 1999 is going to take place. These occur when a new moon orbits directly between the earth and the sun, and the earth passes through the moons shadow.
The eclipse happening tomorrow will be a total eclipse, but only in the Faroe Isles and Svalbard. In areas across Europe, Northern Africa and the Middle East people will be able to see a partial eclipse.
Partial eclipses are far more common than total eclipses. We will experience a partial eclipse every eighteen months to two years. They occur when the earth passes through the moons outer shadow, the penumbra as opposed to the inner shadow, the umbra.
Although the sun and moon appear to be the same size when we look at them, the moon is actually four hundred times smaller than the sun. The reason they look the same is because the sun is four hundred times further away from the earth.

On Thursday 19th March, the Media Team went to the Carrick Centre to interview members of the public, inquiring about their knowledge of the Partial Solar Eclipse, which is happening on Friday 20th March. This was to help them in the BBC News School Report.
The day gave the Team a taste of what real reporting is like; meeting deadlines, recording, interviewing, photographing, and often improvising.
The Gryffe Quilters were only happy to help and interviews can be heard on the link below (to follow shortly!).
The Eclipse is the first since the 1990’s, with 94% of Scotland plunging into darkness from 8:30am to 10:43am. It will be most obscured at 9:34am
